How do we know Jesus Christ is the Messiah?
Messiah Meaning
It is originated from the Hebrew word “Mashiach” which means “Anointed One.” In the Hebrew Scriptures, Mashiach was used of priests and kings, as well as a future leader who would be both priest and king. The Greek Scriptures are the story of Jesus, God’s Messiah.
For us Christians the Messiah is referred to Christ Jesus.
How do we know that Jesus Christ is the Messiah?
Jesus told the woman at the well that he is the messiah (John 4:25-26).
Daniel spoke about the messiah (Daniel 9:24-27) linked to Isaiah 53
Old Testament | New Testament |
The Messiah would be seen as a King
Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, Humble, and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a donkey. |
Matthew 21:6-9 The disciples went and did just as Jesus had instructed them, and brought the donkey and the colt, and laid their coats on them; and He sat on the coats. Most of the crowd spread their coats in the road, and others were cutting branches from the trees and spreading them in the road. The crowds going ahead of Him, and those who followed, were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David; BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD; Hosanna in the highest!” |
The Messiah’s Body would be pierced
Zechariah 12:10A “I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn.” |
John 19:34-37 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. And he who has seen has testified, and his story is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe. For these things came to pass to fulfil the Scripture, “NOT A BONE OF HIM SHALL BE BROKEN.” And again, another Scripture says, “THEY SHALL LOOK ON HIM WHOM THEY PIERCED.” |
The Messiah would be betrayed for thirty pieces of silver
Zechariah 11:12-13
12 And I said unto them, if ye think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So, they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver. 13 And the Lord said unto me, cast it unto the potter: a goodly price that I was prised at of them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver and cast them to the potter in the house of the Lord. |
Matthew 27:9-10
9 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, and they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value; 10 And gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord appointed me. |
Purpose |
|
GIVES HOPE The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favour (Isaiah 61:1-2a). (See also Isaiah 11:1-3 and Isaiah 49:6) |
JUDGMENT …but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth; with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked. Righteousness will be his belt and faithfulness the sash around his waist (Isaiah 11:4-5). (See also Isaiah 61:2) |
SUFFERING/REJECTION He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely, he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray…and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. (Isaiah 53:2b-6) (See also Psalm 118:22) |
VICTORY OVER ENEMIES A day of the LORD is coming when your plunder will be divided among you. I will gather all the nations to Jerusalem to fight against it…Then the LORD will go out and fight against those nations, as he fights in the day of battle. On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will be split in two from east to west, forming a great valley, with half of the mountain moving north and half moving south. You will flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the LORD my God will come, and all the holy ones with him…On that day living water will flow out from Jerusalem, half to the eastern sea and half to the western sea, in summer and in winter. The LORD will be king over the whole earth. On that day there will be one LORD, and his name the only name (Zechariah 14:1-9). (See also Isaiah 11:69 and Ezekiel 31:24). |
